If you have never visited Las Vegas, or any of the other major casino mecca’s, this site is a good site to spend some time on to learn about casinos around the country.

If you have visited Las Vegas regularly, you will already know that Las Vegas is constantly changing. Every year there are new hotels opening and the existing ones are upgrading and changing their existing venues. We try to provide in a short summary form the information you will need to enjoy Las Vegas. However their are no words that can adequately describe Las Vegas. You have to visit it to believe it!

Las Vegas is the mecca for the gambling world in North America, however due to many other casinos springing up around the country as well as the smaller regional sites of Tunica, Mississippi, Biloxi, Mississippi and Atlantic City, Las Vegas has a great deal of competition.

The picture on the left shows the Eiffel tower in front of the Paris hotel and Casino. Sometimes the best deals can be found at some of these locations for hotels and 5 star meals as well as entertainment.

Las Vegas has over 100,000 rooms and with the new Village Center opening in December of 2009, another 5000 has been added. The competition is fierce both to get you stay in one of these fabulous hotels and spend some time in the casinos. All of the casinos employ various marketing approaches to attract visitors. Free drinks, loose slots, fabulous entertainment, some of the best restaurants in the world, swimming and lounging areas are just a few of the amenities available for guests. Of course if you are a high roller, then the sky is the limit for anything you might desire.

Within 5 hours drive of Las Vegas, there is the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam as well as Los Angeles. From boating to golfing to hiking and dirt riding, there is something for everyone in the area.

Atlantic city is much smaller, located in New Jersey on the coast, there are 10 or 15 casinos along the boardwalk and near the marina. There are something like 100 million people within 1 days driving of Atlantic city. People come by the busload every day from New York city, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington and many other cities in the area. Atlantic city has the boardwalk which extends for over 10 miles, along the ocean, many great restaurants and lately discount retail shops with all of the latest fashions to choose from. Atlantic City is not the seedy place it used to be.

Tunica, located along the Mississippi in the state of Mississippi just south of Memphis has 7 or 8 casino hotels to choose from. All are great, not quite on the scale of Las Vegas, but certainly very nice and worth staying at for a few days. These casinos are all on the water, while the hotels attached to them are actually on the ground. They are all connected by covered walkways and you really would not even know that you were crossing onto what essentially is a barge.

Biloxi is coming back. Hit by hurricane Katrina a few years ago, the city and the casinos were devastated, some beyond repair. Some of the largest casinos have been rebuilt and are very attractive now. The city is also slowly rebuilding and hopefully there will not be another hurricane in the near future. Talking to some of the residents and people who work at the casinos, they say that they would never leave the area. They really love living along the coast with its great fishing and beautiful beaches.

Today virtually every province in Canada and every state in the US with the exception of Utah and a few others have casinos. The local governments have realized that casinos can provide an excellent stream of revenue to help fill their coffers and avoid raising taxes on their residents. Much of the money goes into general tax revenues, however many also fund specific projects and endeavors legislated by law.

A vacation at a casino hotel can be one of the least expensive vacations you will ever take, especially if you are lucky at the slots or the tables, or you spend what you budget. It is important to have a budget when you walk into any casino. If you don’t you can lose much more than you ever planned. If you losing, leave and if you win a large amount, also leave or get someone to hold onto the money for you. If you stay, many people have found that before long their winnings have disappeared into the slot machine or on the tables.

Of course if you cannot get to one of these fabulous locations, there are many online sites that offer Texas Holdem and other games. One such site is PartyPoker.com were you can play in tournaments and they even give you a signing bonus when you join.

The Aria Casino is located in the new City Center complex developed by MGM Grand. This is a huge complex and we will describe it in other posts, however this one will focus on the buffet at this casino. The buffet is open and bright, with windows along two sides. This is unusual since many casino buffet rooms are inside and enclosed on all four sides. One side looks out on to the pool area, two of the hot tubs while the other looks onto the pool area entrance. So you have some great views while dining at the buffet and enjoying your lunch or dinner.

We went to the casino and tried their buffet during May 2011 and found it to be excellent. Our overall top buffet is at the Mirage Hotel and casino, however this one ranks a close second. The price is reasonable and the decor and serving dishes are unique as you may observe in some of the pictures. The deserts are excellent, small portions which is ok with us since this means you can try a variety of deserts without wasting a lot of food.

The day we went they offered crab legs hot or cold and of course shrimp. They had all of the other main menu items along with various nationalities as well from Indian,, Mexican, Italian and Japanese. There is definitely something for everyone including the traditional meat and potatoes which many people love.

You definitely will not go hungry here!

There are only a couple of casino hotels in the Palm Springs area of California. There is the Fantasy springs casino and the Agua Caliente casino hotel. Neither of these hotels are actually in Palm Springs since they are located in cities nearby in the valley. The only casino hotel in Palm Springs California is the Spa casino hotel located in downtown Palm Springs on Amado road, two blocks from Palm Canyon drive which is the main road through Palm Springs. It is in the middle of downtown Palm Springs surrounded by many restaurants of all types all within walking distance of the casino.

The Spa Casino Hotel in Palm Springs California has been reviewed before on this web site and we have visited it several times in the past 10 years. It has evolved from being in a tent attached to the hotel to a full fledged casino in an elegant building with very pretty gardens and palm trees surrounding it.

The Spa Casino has a deli restaurant, a buffet and several other restaurants that are higher end. There are many restaurants within blocks of the casino and it is very safe to walk the streets in the area of the casino as well. With a combination of restaurants and condos surrounding this casino it is a safe environment to park your car or walk from your condo to the Spa Casino.

In terms of gaming, there are all of the latest and popular slot machines along with a variety of table games as well. They have a small non smoking area, which is usually quiet since they did not put the best games in this area. the casino can get pretty smoky so if this bothers you, you may want to stay clear of it on business evenings or on the  weekends.

They also have events at the casino. Slot tournaments, draws etc so if you do play a lot make sure you get a slot card and use it. You will be invited to various events that they host for their slot players and table players.

Palm Springs Convention center

The palm Springs Convention center is also with one block of the Spa Casino hotel  in Palm Springs California. this convention center is a state of the art center hosting many events over the year. Patrons and convention goers often go to the Spa Casino Hotel which is within walking distance. It is just one block away. There is ample parking for both the convention center and the casino. Of course you can also use valet parking at the casino.

Restaurants in the Area

If you walk up to Palm Canyon drive and turn left in the direction of the traffic (it is a one way street), you will pass by all of the restaurants. There are quite a few, most with outdoor patios were you can enjoy a meal any time of the day. There are over 1000 restaurants in the area and of course we will not review all of these, but the ones we have are the restaurants we have visited in the area and also enjoy.

We recently had dinner at the buffet at the  Spa Casino in Palm Springs and wanted to pass our thoughts on this buffet to our readers. For the original review of the casino in Palm Springs, click here.

The buffet on Saturday night is billed as a seafood buffet and the cost is $23.99 plus tax. Now if you have a slot card, they will reduce the cost of the buffet by 10% which for two people saves you almost $5.00. We were very disappointed in the buffet, especially the seafood part of it. There were a number of reasons for this disappointment and we will list them a bit later in this post. We had heard good things about the buffet at the Spa Casino, however it really is a matter of personal taste regarding what people think of various restaurants. I can tell you that we have tried many buffets at various casinos and this one rates as one of the worst for us.

Here is our list of reasons, you make your own assessment or opinion on these items:

• No service for drinks, you pick up your own
• Limited seafood – crab legs, salmon, calamari and shrimp
• Crab legs were very small and the legs were filled with water, smelled very fishy
• Calamari was breaded and over cooked so it was difficult to chew
• Shrimp were very small
• Salmon was ok
• There was a large selection of standard items
• These food items were ok
• Desserts were very small

Bottom line was that we paid extra to go for a seafood buffet and were very disappointed in the items that were provided.

Now we should have caught on early before we paid. The time we entered the buffet  was around 6pm which was the typical time that many people will go for dinner. Not only was there no line up to get in, there was no line up any time to get into the buffet. It was very slow, which for us was nice, in that there are not a lot of people around. However what it means is that people are  voting with there feet and going elsewhere.

Not only was the food less than great, the price is high as well. There are many restaurants in Palm Springs, many with happy hour menus and for $50 you can enjoy a very nice meal that is served to you. We think that the combination of high price and poor quality of the food is driving potential customers away in droves.

Canadians wining jackpots in Canada do not have to pay tax on those winnings, however if  you win a jackpot over $1200 in the US, taxes are due and usually collected on the spot. The casino will prepare the appropriate tax slip for you to use in filing your income taxes. If you happen to be a Canadian, they will prepare a 1042-S foreign persons US source income subject to with holding form and deduct 30% of your winnings right on the spot! This comes as a surprise to many people and they are left wondering how or if they will get their money back. If you won a jackpot last year it is time to file your income tax claim and get some or maybe all of that money back that you won in the casino.

Our last post discussed Casino Slot Machine Win Loss Statements, why you need them and how to get them. Once you have them you can begin to get all of the tax forms and think about filing your tax forms. This particular post is focused on what Canadians need to do if you win a jackpot larger than $1200!

A bit Daunting at First

The list we have assembled below may seem a bit daunting at first, however if you follow the steps outlined below and you read all of the documentation, you should not have any problems. Remember that this approach is for non-residents, Canadians in particular. It is also a simplified approach and for gambling winnings only. If you have other sources of income then you may need a professional to assist you in completing the tax forms.

Step by Step Approach to Filing Income Tax Forms for Slot Machine Jackpot Winnings

Here is a short step by step approach, which we will expand on later in the post:

• Request win / loss statements from all casinos for the tax year in question
• Assemble all 1042-s Forms
• Download W-7 form and instructions from IRS web site
• Read instructions for W-7
• Decide if you need to apply for an IRS ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)
• If so assemble approved identification papers and fill out form
• Download 1040NR US Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return & instructions
• Read instructions for 1040 NR
• Complete 1040NR and attached 1042-S documents and win / loss documents
• Make a copy of everything for your records
• Send the following into the IRS
• Completed W-7
• Identification documentation
• Completed 1040NR
• Copies of Win / Loss statements
• All 1042-S forms

Once  you have done all of this you are ready to send your tax claim into the IRS and it will probably take a month or two before you hear back from them , hopefully with your tax rebate.

Documentation Certifying Your Identity

In our case we needed to have a passport copy made and certified that it was a true copy. The only people that can do this as far as the US government is concerned is the Canadian passport office. Turns out that the passport office does this for free and if you drop your request off and pick it up they can complete the request within 3 or 4 business days. Make sure you take your completed W-7 in with you to show that why you need the copy of your passport certified.

Of course you can mail it in as well, however it will take longer to process and return to you. When you send in the request, you will also need a simple letter stating the following:

• Date
• Subject
• To Whom it may concern
• Statement as to what you need and why
• Printed name and address
• Signature

That is what we have learned so far about Filing Income Tax Forms for Slot Machine Jackpot Winnings. We are currently waiting for a response and will add a new post when we get our money back. If you decide to go to a professional be prepared to hand over a significant chunk of your tax money that is returned. They do not work for free or cheaply.

Visiting the Fremont Street Experience is one of the must things to do in Las Vegas. If you are staying somewhere on the strip in one of the strip hotels, take a taxi, the bus or drive down to downtown Las Vegas and see the Fremont Street Experience. Best time to go is early evening just before it gets dark. Park at the Golden Nugget hotel parking lot and get your parking stub stamped at the cashiers cage in the Golden Nugget and then head out to the street.  The picture on the left is showing one of the shows that is  done in lights on the ceiling. Of course you can play a little in the casino or have dinner there or in any of the other hotels,  but the main reason we are suggesting you want to make the trip down is to visit Fremont street and take in all of the action.

What is the Fremont Street Experience?

 The entire street, which is the original downtown Las Vegas mecca is covered over for about six city blocks. On the ceiling every 30 minutes at night, they put on a sound and light show for all of the tourists. The lights from the casinos shown in the picture on the left are turned off and the show begins with a fabulous light and music show that really will enthrall just about anyone. There are no street lights on this section of Fremont street, since the casinos generate more light than any street light ever would. The street is closed to auto traffic and there are literally thousands of people strolling along and watching the show on the ceiling.

This picture  shows what the street looks like during the daytime. Nothing special, but you can see the supporting columns that hold the ceiling up and support the large speakers that deliver fabulous sound. When the light show is not on, there are many other activities as well taking place. it changes all of the time so if you do not see what we saw, I am sure you will see other things as well that we equally interesting.

For example there were two dance bands at either end if the street. These bands, the singers and the dancers were excellent and worth spending some time listening to. You can also zip lining along the street for several blocks as well. They have this set up above the street level and four people can go at the same time. Usually groups have races to see who can get to the other end the quickest.

There are also many people who will pose for a picture. There are cartoon characters as well as characters from various TV shows and of course there is always an Elvis or two. If you want to take your picture with one of these characters, note that they will always have their hand out for a tip. This is how they make their living and although they initially make it look like something that they just do for fun, they have their hands out for a tip. There was even a mini Elvis as shown in the picture on the left. And of course he wanted his tip afterwords.

If you have been to the Fremont Street Experience, write a comment or two about your experience. It is well worth spending the time to go there, just make sure you hold on tight to your wallet or purse while watching the show.

Well we just spent another fabulous two days at the Wynn Casino hotel in Las Vegas!  We had a Wynn hotel promotion and we use these every chance we get. This hotel in our opinion is the best hotel in the area and we always try to stay here when we come to Las Vegas.  When you are the best, you can also charge higher rates and the only way we can stay at the Wynn is by being there on a Wynn Hotel Promotions coupon which lately we receive quite often. Other hotels are charging less than one hundred dollars for the room, while the Wynn hotel can charge over $150 per room per night for the basic room which is very elegant and well appointed, and way up from there.Our room faced onto the strip and we had an absolutely fantastic view of the strip, the mall the western side of Vegas and of course the mountains. At night with all of the lights, we had a really fantastic view!

Play Were you Want to Stay

Our motto has always been, play were you want to stay, and we always want to stay at the Wynn hotel or it’s sister hotel the Encore. We have full descriptions of each of these hotels on our web site, but we just had to write this additional post, because we just got back from staying at this fabulous hotel. The picture above was taken from across the street in front of the Fashion Show Mall, which by the way is another place to visit while you are in Vegas. Wynn Hotel Promotions are really valuable when you think about it. Not only are we staying in a room that they usually sell for $150 plus, it is an extremely nice room and they also gives us $150 in free play. I know some people get a lot more, but for us and the level of gambling we do this is fabulous.

Visit the Wynn Casino – Get a slot Card

If you are in Las Vegas and staying at some other hotel, at least walk through the casino and I am sure you will be blown away. From the mountain out front with the water falls to the opulent shops in the promenade to the tree line walkway to the check in and the bright red casino, there is something for everyone. They even have an eighteen hole golf course at the back of the hotel should you wish to play. We have not checked out the prices for a round of golf, however I am sure they are expensive.

While you are there sign up for a slot card and play for at least a little while. Depending on your amount of play, they may send you an invitation to stay at the hotel for reduced rates!  For more information on Slot cards, check out our categories for more posts on this subject.

Always Tip the Waitress

You have to hand it to Steve Wynn. When you receive a Wynn Hotel Promotion inviting you to stay at their hotel and even give you free play, he knows you will spend money in his casino, in his restaurants and maybe a show. You can do all of that easily and really enjoy yourself. Drinks while playing in the casino are free and it would be easy to just take the drink and go on playing. We see lot’s of people doing just that. We believe that you should  always tip the waitress. They have to make a living too and besides once they know they are getting tips, you will have fantastic service.

We always tip a dollar and although that is not a lot, we receive the best service and never lack for a drink. Whether it is alcoholic,  juice, coffee or even a hot chocolate, they can deliver almost whatever you offer. Just make sure you tip them each time.

Well that sums up our trip to the Wynn hotel this year on a Wynn Hotel Promotion card. We are looking forward to going again soon. If you like the Wynn as much as we do, let us know. leave your comments too.

If you are the type of person to go to casino’s a lot, then you already know about winning streaks and first time winners. I think that I just finished a nice little winning streak. Sure you say, why don’t you be more positive and think that you are going to continue winning. Well after 25 years of going to casinos, I can tell you that you have days were you cannot do anything wrong and you win at almost every slot machine. Sometimes this even extends into days or even several months. But then it all comes to an end and you cannot win anything no matter how hard you try!

Several weeks ago I won a $3000 jack pot and then the same night I won several more small $200 dollar jack pots. What a night it was and we could not wait to go back the next day!  We went back a few days later and I  won again, nothing big but I was ahead of the casino. Small amounts and this has continued for several weeks. Anytime you are ahead of the casino it is a blessing and luck, believe me.

Then all of sudden, I had a losing night were not only did I not win over the night, I did not even win a jack pot, not even a small one. Hopefully this is not the end of my winning run, but these things seem to come in waves and I may be nearing the beginning of the trough again or so it seems that way.

First Time Winners

This is the situation were you take a friend to the casino for the first time and they play $20 and win a jack pot on that $20. Of course they are now hooked and may win a couple of times. It can be frustrating for anyone who plays a lot and goes through these losing streaks. They are excited and make it look so easy, but then a few nights or weeks later they find that they are now losing money and it is not so easy. Welcome to the club!

Play Conservatively and Enjoy Your Self

We play conservatively and try to limit ourselves to how much we will spend in a night. It is the only way to control your losses and also stay ahead of the casino. So now we will not go back to the casino for maybe a week and then we will see what happens. We have been going often, because when you win , you just want to keep going and win some more. Once you begin to lose, you really have to limit yourself.

It is that time of year again and we are back in Tunica, Mississippi on our annual traip to Tunica and the Tunica Casino. This time we are staying at the Gold Strike Hotel and Casino for four nights complimentary. This is such a great deal since the rooms are very nice, clean and modern as is the hotel. If you are looking for a place to stay for the night whether you gamble or not this is one of the better hotels to stay at.

Rooms at the Gold Strike In Tunica

Our room at the Gold Strike hotel looks out onto the Mississippi river from the 22nd floor. It is close to the elevators which we like and the room is one of the upgraded rooms with a separate foyer and a large marble bathroom. the only thing lacking is a flat screen TV in the bathroom to match the one in the main bedroom.  This is probably a $150 to $200 room and when you consider it is complimentary, it truly is a great deal. Sure we like to gamble and sometimes we pay for it in losses, but sometimes we also make money and it is a win for us overall.

Two for One Deals at the Buffet

We ate at the buffet this morning. Today is a 2 for one deal when you pay for your meal using your express comp dollars! These are dollars that you receive as you are gambling and can be used for everything from paying for meals to paying for your room if it is not fully complimentary. Several times during the month the Gold Strike offers these two for one deals at the buffet when you use you express comp’s. All you have to do is give them your MLife card, show proper ID such as a drivers license and they will give you two free buffets which only cost half price when you pay with express comp’s. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

Changes at the Gold Strike

So far we have not noticed any changes at the Gold Strike from last year. There certainly have not been any major upgrades that we saw and the same machines appear to be all in the same places. Many casinos will move machines around and / or install new ones from time to time. So far it does not look like they have done this.

The same is true at the Horseshoe casino run by Harrahs. It is next door to the Gold Strike.  We also visited the Roadhouse Casino next door to the Horseshoe which is also run by Harrahs. We like this small casino and it has introduced a lot of new machines in the last year, many that we like. It kept many of the old stalwarts that we also enjoy. One of the things we like the most about the Roadhouse is that you can order your drink at the machine, by typing on the slot machine message board. No waiting to flag down a waitress, just type in your order and your drink is delivered a few minutes later! How great is that?

Well that completes our update for this visit. Looks like the same old great value and great food, what more could you ask for? Well maybe winning at the slots would help, which we have not done yet. We recently visited the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino a couple of times in the past month and either we have enjoyed their buffet too many times or it was not as good as it usually is. They usually have two kinds of soup, but this time they only had chili and a soup that I did not care for. Ok you can put that down to personal taste, however some of the other things are starting to make me wonder if it is really as good as I thought it was.

It is a nice buffet, very clean and a nice selection of food. The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino buffet has all of the basics, so there is no problem with that. They were really busy and some of the trays were empty and for example you could not get any spare ribs at the time we went through the buffet. They may have brought some more out later, however it was too busy to stand in line again to get to the ribs.

The are a good variety of deserts, however the crust on the pie is too thick and heavy. Obviously these pies are not made on site, however they just do not appear to be fresh. Maybe I am just disenchanted with the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino because we have been there one too many times, but I do not think so. Another couple who came with us felt that the Rideau Carleton Casino actually had a better buffet. I was really surprised when I heard that since we  do not really like this casino’s buffet either. The buffet costs $1799 at night and $10.00 for lunch except on senior days when the price of the buffet at lunch is only $5.00. for these prices one should not complain since the food is quite good. although it could be improved, at these prices it is more than worth the money.

The last time we went to the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, it was a Saturday night and my wife ordered crab legs which were a special on the menu that evening. It cost an extra $5.99. Not as good as other places were we have had crab legs. The legs were not cracked or precut so it meant that you really had to fight to get at the meat inside the shell of the legs.  We would not order this particular special again preferring to save our money for better deals and crab legs.

Well that is about it. Maybe this sounds like a griping session, however we just did not enjoy the buffet as much as other times. If you have been there and tried the buffet, please leave a comment. Most people never have to be concerned about casino win loss statements, however if you do then you are one of the lucky ones who has won a jackpot and  needs to file an IRS tax statement to claim some of your money back. Canadians are automatically taxed at source at a rate of 30% on any winnings over $1200 in the United States. We recently had this experience and stated with a win of $1329, only to lose $399 to taxes with held at the casino for tax purposes. Apparently Americans do not have to pay the tax up front, but they do have to show this gambling income on their tax forms and pay the appropriate taxes. So what does all of this have to do with a casino slot machine win loss statement.

Claim Losses against your Jackpot income

Well if you feel that if you lost a great deal of money in the tax year that you won your jackpot, you can claim this loss against the jackpot that you won and reduce the amount of tax that you paid. The only way to be able to request a win loss statement is to ask for one from the casino that you play at. To do this you must have used a slot card which identifies you to the casino and tracks the amount of money you pay into the machine as well as your winnings. How do I request a Win Loss Statement

As long as you are using a slot card when you are gambling at the slots you will be able to request a casino slot machine win loss statement at the end of each year.  Each casino company is a bit different. however for most, all you have to do is go to their web site and search around until you find a link that tells you how to request a win loss statement. Some allow you to do this online and you can download a pdf almost immediately. In other cases you will have to fill in a form and either send by mail or by fax. Once your request is received, you will receive your report within 5 to 7 business days in most cases.

Most people know that you might start off with, lets say $50 and during an evening you might win a number of small jackpots which of course you use to continue gambling. On a particularly good night you might turn your original $50 over many times so that it looks like you have gambled maybe $300 or even more. At the end of the night using this example if you finally lost your $50,  your win  loss statement for that day would show you gambled $300, won $250 and lost $50! It is this loss of $50 that you want to claim against your jackpot that you paid tax on. Request all of your win loss statements from all casinos which you have a slot card for. You can add up the wins and losses for all of these casinos to show what your total loss was to justify that the tax deducted should be returned to you or at least part of it depending on how big a jackpot you won.
