Casino Reviews

There are literally hundreds of casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Tunica, Biloxi and many other smaller cities across the US and Canada. Our site is providing information about the hotels, the casinos, the shows, the conventions, the entertainment and much, much more.

Feel free to visit any of our pages as we add them on a weekly basis. This is the main page for the Casino Reviews Web site. We are constantly adding more pages so feel free to come back any time. If you have comments or wish to add your stories to our web site, please leave a comment at the end of this post or any of the other posts. Please note that we retain all editorial copyright for any thing appearing on this page.

If you have never visited Las Vegas, or any of the other major casino mecca’s, this site is a good site to spend some time on to learn about casinos around the country.

If you have visited Las Vegas regularly, you will already know that Las Vegas is constantly changing. Every year there are new hotels opening and the existing ones are upgrading and changing their existing venues. We try to provide in a short summary form the information you will need to enjoy Las Vegas. However their are no words that can adequately describe Las Vegas. You have to visit it to believe it!

Paris Hotel & CasinoLas Vegas is the mecca for the gambling world in North America, however due to many other casinos springing up around the country as well as the smaller regional sites of Tunica, Mississippi, Biloxi, Mississippi and Atlantic City, Las Vegas has a great deal of competition.

The picture on the left shows the Eiffel tower in front of the Paris hotel and Casino. Sometimes the best deals can be found at some of these locations for hotels and 5 star meals as well as entertainment.

Las Vegas has over 100,000 rooms and with the new Village Center opening in December of 2009, another 5000 has been added. The competition is fierce both to get you stay in one of these fabulous hotels and spend some time in the casinos. All of the casinos employ various marketing approaches to attract visitors. Free drinks, loose slots, fabulous entertainment, some of the best restaurants in the world, swimming and lounging areas are just a few of the amenities available for guests. Of course if you are a high roller, then the sky is the limit for anything you might desire.

Within 5 hours drive of Las Vegas, there is the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam as well as Los Angeles. From boating to golfing to hiking and dirt riding, there is something for everyone in the area.

Atlantic city is much smaller, located in New Jersey on the coast, there are 10 or 15 casinos along the boardwalk and near the marina. There are something like 100 million people within 1 days driving of Atlantic city. People come by the busload every day from New York city, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington and many other cities in the area. Atlantic city has the boardwalk which extends for over 10 miles, along the ocean, many great restaurants and lately discount retail shops with all of the latest fashions to choose from. Atlantic City is not the seedy place it used to be.

Tunica, located along the Mississippi in the state of Mississippi just south of Memphis has 7 or 8 casino hotels to choose from. All are great, not quite on the scale of Las Vegas, but certainly very nice and worth staying at for a few days. These casinos are all on the water, while the hotels attached to them are actually on the ground. They are all connected by covered walkways and you really would not even know that you were crossing onto what essentially is a barge.

Biloxi is coming back. Hit by hurricane Katrina a few years ago, the city and the casinos were devastated, some beyond repair. Some of the largest casinos have been rebuilt and are very attractive now. The city is also slowly rebuilding and hopefully there will not be another hurricane in the near future. Talking to some of the residents and people who work at the casinos, they say that they would never leave the area. They really love living along the coast with its great fishing and beautiful beaches.

Today virtually every province in Canada and every state in the US with the exception of Utah and a few others have casinos. The local governments have realized that casinos can provide an excellent stream of revenue to help fill their coffers and avoid raising taxes on their residents. Much of the money goes into general tax revenues, however many also fund specific projects and endeavors legislated by law.

A vacation at a casino hotel can be one of the least expensive vacations you will ever take, especially if you are lucky at the slots or the tables, or you spend what you budget. It is important to have a budget when you walk into any casino. If you don’t you can lose much more than you ever planned. If you losing, leave and if you win a large amount, also leave or get someone to hold onto the money for you. If you stay, many people have found that before long their winnings have disappeared into the slot machine or on the tables.

All of the articles have been written from personal experience and reflect our personal comments. If we have not visited a casino we will still add a review, however we will indicate that the review is based on an information search only. If you have personal comments please leave your comments.

Search Light Nevada Nugget Casino

January 21st, 2012 admin Posted in Nevada, SearchLight | No Comments »

We recently visited Searchlight, Nevada and went to the  Nugget Casino in Searchlight for lunch. There are two casinos in this little village, one is the Nugget Casino and the other is called Terrible’s.

The village of Searchlight is at the intersection of routes 95 and 164 between Boulder City and Laughlin in the middle of the desert.  There is nothing around for miles, so this old mining town is a great spot to stop for gas, perhaps a bite to eat and also perhaps a bit of gambling.

The address is for those that need it is: 100 N. Hwy. 95, P.O. Box 187, Searchlight, NV 89406 and the phone number is (702)297-1201.

The Searchlight Nugget is a neat little casino with a bar, a small restaurant in the casino and of course approximately 90 slot machines. The town of Searchlight sports another casino, a gas station, a school and a small home development along with the usual set of trailers that make up the small population. People living in Searchlight, either work at the local businesses or work at the Lake Mohave park a few miles away.

Restaurant

The restaurant was busy when we stopped. We sat at the counter, since all of the tables were already taken and we also like to sit at the counter as a means of meeting people to learn about the surrounding area.  Well, the food was ok, however we were not overly impressed with the service. It took a long time to get our meal, perhaps because they were already busy when we arrived.

There was one major turn off for us and that was the waiters that served us. They were very nice people, friendly and offering good service. They talked to us, inquired where we were from, since it was pretty obvious that we were tourists. The thing that turned us off was their teeth. The obviously could not afford a dentist and as a result some were missing teeth and many of the teeth they still had were black. It is not a pretty site to look at when you are having your meal and someone is talking and smiling at you with a mouthful of bad teeth.  Some may say we are being snobbish or overly critical, however it was a shock to us. You just do not expect this when you are in a public restaurant that offers meals etc. The waiters lived in Searchlight or in a small trailer park a few miles away.

Entertainment

The Searchlight Nugget has 99 slot and video machines including an old western style “Mills Black Beauty” cowboy slot machine. The Searchlight Nugget has three gaming tables, a small bar/lounge with an old time Rock-Ola music box and a cashiers cage for change and to pay your restaurant check.

You can also take a 20 mile  drive over to Lake Mohave. The area – which is warm year-round – has some of the best water sports and outdoor adventure in the state. You can enjoy nature hikes, biking and horseback riding along the shore or you can rent a Jet Ski, sailboat, motorboat, canoe or kayak and get on the water. This is a state park and you will have to pay an entrance fee to get into the park. The Searchlight Nugget Casino Bar has live entertainment every weekend in the form of local and regional bands.

Reviews of the Nugget Casino in Searchlight

Although we have visited the Nugget Casino in Searchlight, we were also interested in what other people thought of the casino and the restaurant. Many found this to be a quaint little place with good food and a place to spend a few dollars at on the slots.

No one mentioned anything about bad service or really any major negatives. It is not a Las Vegas casino , that is for sure, but it is a nice spot to stop over at on your way to Vegas or to Laughlin , Nevada or points further south along route 95.

Route 66 Casino

January 7th, 2012 admin Posted in New Mexico | No Comments »

We have always wanted to stop at the Route 66 Casino located just west of Albuquerque, New Mexico and we finally did on our last road trip through this part of the southern United states. The Route 66 casino is approximately 20 minutes west of the city. It is a great place to stop for the night if you are traveling through,  need gas or need a room and a good place to sleep. This casino hotel is right on interstate I40 on the south side of the highway about 10 miles west of Albuquerque.  We stayed there one night and will definitely stay again sometime at this hotel when we are in the area.

This is an Indian run hotel and casino, so there is smoking allowed in the casino, however they do have well equipped non smoking rooms. We also ate at the restaurant in the morning for breakfast. The meal was large, at a good price and the service was excellent. One of the big advantages of staying at this particular hotel is that the Indians have decided not to charge state or federal tax, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay and it was very reasonable. This was the first time we had stayed at this particular hotel so we paid the regular rate. Next time we hope to pay less since we signed up for a slot card!

More details on this casino follow:

Slot Machines

Route 66 Casino Hotel features more than 1,700 slots in every denomination from pennies, nickels and quarters all the way to $5, $10 and $100 high stakes machines.

Slot machines include:

  • Jeff Foxworthy
  • Hit the Heights
  • Beat the Bandit
  • Super Nova
  • Diamond Factory
  • Sex and the City
  • Top Dollar
  • Crystal Fortune
  • Stargate
  • Quick Strike

Table Games

Blackjack, Craps and Roulette games feature a variety of betting limits for the beginner to the most experienced high roller.

Games like Pai Gow Poker, Three Card Poker and Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em are also available.

Restaurants

Thunder road Steakhouse, Buffet 66, Johnny Rockets, Main street, Travel Center (Dairy Queen) and lounge. We ate in the Main Street restaurant and were more than satisfied with our breakfast meal as well as the service.

What We Liked

Variety of slot machines

Buffet ( they have a buffet, we did not eat there)

Hotel rates are very reasonable, no taxes on your room!

Easy access fromI40

Safe environment in the casino, hotel and parking areas

Great stopover point on your way past Albuquerque or points west or east

What We Did Not Like

There are no real complaints about the Route 66 hotel & casino, other than they allow smoking in the casino , which most if not all casinos do in the US. Some are just better with air circulation than others.

It is a 3.5 star hotel in our estimation and quite adequate for our needs

Slot Player Card

They have their own  slot players card system and when you sign up for the first time you usually get a gift.

If you have not taken advantage of slot player cards, there are a number of benefits that many slot players should consider. Free or discounted rooms, email mailing list of promotions, free or discounted meals, access to entertainment, and a tax report outlining your losses and wins for tax claim purposes.

Parking

There is ample parking at the Route 66 hotel & casino in a large parking garage in front of  the hotel. There is a large surface parking lot for thousands of cars.

Directions: This casino hotel is right on interstate I40 on the south side of the highway about 10 miles west of Albuquerque.

Rideau Carleton Raceway Casino

December 21st, 2011 admin Posted in Ontario, Ottawa | No Comments »

We wrote a post about the Rideau Carleton Racetrack Casino in Ottawa, located on Albion road. This is a combination race track, casino and sometimes exhibition and show venue.  The original post can be found by Clicking Here. We thought we would provide an update to this original post that we made about this particular casino since there have been some changes we wanted to make people aware of.

The Rideau Carleton Raceway casino is still the same configuration, restaurant and bar area, however they have added three electronic tables for patrons to use. There is a blackjack electronic table, a Baccarat, Roulette and Sic-Bo! The black jack table has the usual video dealer that is a very shapely dealer for you to be amused by while you are gambling and possibly be distracted by.

Multiline Slots

They have moved many of the slot machines around to accommodate these tables and in the process have installed many new slot machines of various themes and denominations. There are many more 1cent and 2 cent machines with multiple lines were you bet a maximum of $2 and $4 on a penny machine. These have become very popular all over North America and the Rideau Carleton Raceway casino is following suit with these machines. Many of the popular traditional machines have had to make way for all of these new slots.

Very Busy

If anything this casino is becoming more and more popular. No matter what time you go there, there are always people there and it seems that even at 1 am in the morning it is crowded with people. If you want your favorite machine, you are going to have to wait until it is vacated before you can use it or you arrive at 9 am in the morning. Even then sometimes you have to wait until someone is finished.

Comp’s

Comp’s are still bad compared to other casinos, so no change there. Payouts are ridiculous. If you win more than $200 on one press of the button, someone has to come and pay you instead of just printing a ticket. Not sure of the reason, but the slot attendants still have their hands out looking for tips. Service is slow so most don’t bother tipping any more. Why tip for bad service.

Slot Attendant Service

In fact we recently won a nice little jackpot which we wanted to have a check instead of cash. Once I was able to get the attention of the attendants, it only took about 10 minutes to have a check printed. However I had to wait at least 30 minutes before I could even get someone to come and process the win. I think they know that a check will be required and there will be no tip, so why stop and process the jackpot. Pretty bad service in my opinion.

Anyway it is still a great place to spend an evening, provided that you limit your losses and control your gambling. Have a drink , maybe something to eat and play a little bit for an enjoyable evening!

New York New York Casino and Hotel

December 7th, 2011 admin Posted in Las Vegas, Nevada | No Comments »

The New York Casino and hotel in Las Vegas is truly spectacular. Emulating the New York skyline with a roller coaster ride that runs through the casino and outside as well there is lots to see and do in this casino hotel in Las Vegas. The picture on the right was taken from one of the bridges that crosses the strip from the New York Hotel to the MGM Grand Casino on the other side of the road. This is one of the best panorama views that I have been able to take of this hotel.

We have stayed here several times and although the hotel is not our favorite, it is a very nice hotel to stay at. Personally I like the casino more than others due to its action orientation and night life atmosphere. You can roam the streets of downtown New York, visit a bar with dueling pianos or visit a pub were they dance on the bar.  The casino is in and around of this and they also have some really great slot machines. I have won a few jack pots as well here on slots and on video poker machines.

One time we were just walking by and my wife needed to use the bathroom. We went inside and I decided to play a video poker machine. Before she returned, I had hit a royal flush and earned a cool $1000. Now this is the way I like to gamble.

The picture on the left shows the skyline of the hotel at night. Again taken from one of the bridges crossing the strip You can see the wire fence in the foreground.  It really is a spectacular view and as we have already mentioned there is lots to do at this casino. What We Did Not Like

  • It is a 4 star hotel in our estimation and quite adequate for our needs
  • Rooms in the hotel are getting a bit dated as of 2011
  • Getting to your room can be confusing, due to the many different elevator banks

Slot Player Card

They are part of the MGM Mirage slot players card system. Slot members can take advantage of benefits at many Las Vegas hotels,  as well as sister hotels in Tunica, Biloxi, Laughlin and Reno.

If you have not taken advantage of slot player cards, there are a number of benefits that many slot players should consider. Parking

There is ample parking at the New York hotel & casino in a large parking garage beside the hotel. There is no surface parking that we observed. Where to Stay in Las Vegas

December 7th, 2011 admin Posted in Las Vegas | 1 Comment »

A nephew of mine and his wife are planing to go to Vegas for the first time and were asking were they should stay. I initially recommended they should stay at one of the following  hotels. They are all close to each other and in the center of everything.

  • Mirage
  • Treasure island (TI)
  • Wynn,
  • Venation
  • Paris
  • Bellagio

They are prime locations and often a little more pricey than some of the other hotels along the strip. My nephew is looking for something more affordable and sent the following note.

We got a price on a couple hotels you haven’t recommended, let me know what you think of these.

  • Luxor
  • Rio All Suite
  • New York New York
  • MGM Grand
  • Mandalay Bay
  • Aria

They are all 4 stars and are a couple hundred less than the Mirage which we are looking into instead of these options. If you could let me know your thoughts

My comments on these hotels are as follows:

They are all very good hotels and we have stayed Mgm, NYNY, and Aria. It really comes down to location.

Rio- off the strip and you cannot walk to the strip. I think they have a shuttle that you can take or you can take a taxi. Apparently they have a really good night club there if you can get in

Mandalay Bay – very nice hotel, on the strip, across from the airport, but at the extreme south end of the strip, probably 2 miles from the mirage. lots of walking to get anywhere and you do not want to take taxis all of the time

Luxor – better location, on the strip, at the south end, still a long way from the main hotels.

Aria – on the strip, between NYNY and Bellagio, across the street from the Mgm Grand, good location , brand new and very modern looking. we personally do not like it because it is all glass and steel, grey, not the desert tones, huge place and offers everything you will want.

MGM – on the strip, huge, (5000 rooms) can take the monorail to other locations from this hotel, across the street from the NYNY and Aria .

New York, New York- I like this place,my wife not so much, unique in that it represents the ny sky line, and streets of new york inside in the restaurant area, has a roller coaster going through it, has two neat bars – coyotes and also the dueling pianos.

For my money I would stay at NYNY or Mgm. and get a M-life slot card to use when I am playing the slots there. . You can still walk to the Bellagio fountains, the Mirage volcano and the TI pirate show ( about a mile) as well as many of the other hotels along the strip.

Take Good Walking Shoes

Remember these hotels are huge, just to get from your room to the street is a good walk, so make sure you take good walking shoes.

For free drinks , make sure you have some money in the slot machine, whether you are playing or not, tip $1 for a drink for each of you and order whatever you want.

if you go downtown, take a taxi, do not walk. it is too far and there are some less than good areas on the way, especially at night.

What is there to do in Las Vegas

November 21st, 2011 admin Posted in Nevada | No Comments »

A friend who has never been to Vegas before is going for the first time and will be celebrating his 30 year anniversary. This is a trip they both have been looking forward to for sometime. He asked me what I thought they should do while in Vegas. I sent them the following list of things to do and hopefully this will help other people going to Vegas for the first time as well.

Here is a list of things you may want to consider as something to do while in Vegas in addition to gambling and seeing all of the shows that are available, in no particular order

  • Downtown Fremont experience at night
  • Caesars Form indoor mall
  • Venation indoor mall
  • Take a ride on a Gondola at the Venetian
  • Go to the top of the Effiel Tower at the Paris hotel
  • Bellagio fountains
  • Bellagio themed gardens off the main reception area
  • Bellagio pool area
  • Mirage volcano, at night weather permitting
  • TI pirate show weather permitting
  • Tour the casinos, many are just plain amazing – Bellagio, Caesars, Wynn,
  • The shopping center mall across from Wynn

  • Red rock canyons – 1 hour away
  • Grand canyon – 5 hours by car, can also take helicopter rides
  • Trip into the desert if interested
  • Pool time at your hotel
  • Search shows playing and book in advance – Circ de Soleil are spectacular
  • Go to at least one good buffet – Wynn, Bellagio, Mirage
  • Lots of inexpensive fast food places – at the mall, and some casinos
  • Dueling piano bar at New York New York casino
  • Tigers at the MGM Grand hotel
  • Just walk the strip and take in the sites
  • Sit at a bar in a casino, have a drink and people watch, Mirage Sports bar is good for this (if you are sitting at a bar with a 25 cent slot machine in front of you, stick a $20 bill in , play slowly and your drinks should be free)
  • Split your meals when you can, most are huge and one person cannot eat everything by themselves
  • Visit the Apple store in the Fashion Center mall across from the Wynn Casino
  • Visit the Fashion Center Mall for all types of shopping. There is also a food court on the 3rd floor if you want a quick inexpensive meal
  • Get a slot card and use it when you are playing. They are free and you might get free room offers in the future
  • Sit at a slot machine, put $20 dollars in and play slow. Ask a waitress for a drink of pretty much any kind, and tip a dollar each time to have a free drink

Make sure you take really good walking shoes. You will be doing a lot of walking. Drink lots of water. You can be dehydrated quickly if it is hot.

Encore Casino Hotel Rooms

November 7th, 2011 admin Posted in Las Vegas | No Comments »

Back in Sept of 2011, we wrote a post about receiving an invitation from the Encore and Wynn Casino in Las Vegas to stay free at either hotel. You can read this post by clicking here.   Well we went to Las Vegas and stayed in a suite at the Encore Hotel , which is part of the Wynn chain of hotels that were designed and built by Steve Wynn.

We were only on the 11th floor, however even with this view we were more than satisfied. The picture on the right shows you what we saw of the strip and also the mountains in the distance.

Circus Circus and the Las Vegas Hilton hotels are not far away and all in all we were very satisfied with this view.

Our room was also grand. It was a two room suite with a work area, large couch to recline on and a flat screen TV that rotated between the bedroom and the living room. Everything was elegant and the bathroom provided a shower as well as a tub to soak in. There was also another small flat screen TV in the bathroom to allow you to keep up with the news or your favorite soap TV show.

I added a couple of pictures at the bottom of this post to show you what the room is like. Hope you enjoy them. When you are staying free at a hotel like this you really appreciate just how nice they are. This is a 5 category hotel for sure.

We were very impressed with the hotel. The only negative and really all of the hotels in Las Vegas suffer from this is the size of the place. They are huge and that means a lot of walking. When you consider that there is probably 3000 rooms in the Encore and another 3000 rooms at the Wynn, these places get really large.

We tried gambling at Encore and it just did not work for us, so we would walk over to the Wynn casino, all indoors of course and play at the Wynn Casino. We did far better here and I must say that the waitresses were always around with free drinks for us. We tipped a dollar every time and they made sure we had what ever we wanted.

We also ate at the Switch restaurant located at Encore. This is the second time we have dined at this restaurant. My wife had Alaskan King Crab legs and I had the 9 oz filet Mignon steak. I was very satisfied with the steak, however my wife was disappointed with the crab legs. They were not very large and not very many for the price.  Overall we felt a bit rushed and the meal was very pricey.  With a glass of wine each and the meal it came to over $200 for the two of us and I think that this is really too much considering the service we received and the quality of the food.

For those of you who may not be aware the restaurant walls at Switch a;long with the ceiling change every 20 minutes or so. There are about 3 or 4 different designs that are displayed while you are dining. They change automatically and give you a different atmosphere each time. We saw 3 changes and it does get a bit boring the second time around. I would suggest you dine once to see this and then try another place.

Here are the pictures of our room that I promised earlier in this post. If you have stayed at the Encore and would like to leave comments , please do so at the bottom of this post.

We are visiting the Gold Strike Casino once again this fall and thought we would write a brief update about this casino, as well as it’s neighbor the Horse Shoe Casino and the Roadhouse Casino. You can click on any of the links above and Gold Strike hotel & casino in Tunicareview more information about all of these great vacation spots.

We checked in a bit early and were given our room key right away. The October time frame prior to thanksgiving is a slow period for the the hotels in this area and there are lots of rooms available. They put us on the 31st floor with a great view of the river.

We are staying free at the hotel as part of a comp package we received in the mail from the hotel. We were offered free rooms for two nights, $25 towards meals and $55 in free play. When you combine this with the new express comps feature and points conversion for food while staying at the hotel, it turns out that this is a pretty good deal.

The hotel as usual met all our expectations and we would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to spend a few days gambling, playing golf in the area or taking in some of the activities in Memphis.

We noticed that the buffet is perhaps a little bit reduced from past years, however the food is just as great and the value is there.  Service was a bit slow, but then we are on vacation and not in a hurry.

the new express comp feature is a really nice add on. Your screen on the slot machine you play will show you exactly how much you have in express comp’s. You do not need to visit the M-Life desk any longer to get a comp for a meal. Just hand over your M-Life card to the cashier and they will use the comp’s on your card to pay for your meal. And the best part is that when you use your comp’s the meal will be half price! We think this is a really good deal for everyone and another reason to always use your slot card.

They have updated the slots with all of the latest multi-line penny machines while still maintaining many of the traditional reel machines as well. There are less video poker machines as well and very few keno machines if you happen to be interested in them. There was no damage at all due to the floods as far as we could tell to the hotel, the casino or even the grounds around the hotel.

This is a great place to visit and we will be coming back here again.

Presque Isle Casino Reviews

October 7th, 2011 admin Posted in Erie, Pensylvania | 1 Comment »

We passed through the Presque Isle Downs Casino and decided to write a review about it. We  only spent about an hour in the casino.  We did not try any of the bars, or restaurants at the casino, so our comments are based on looking at the web site and our brief time spent there. This is a casino only facility. There is no hotel with this facility, although there are motels and hotels in the area.

Presque Isle Casino Reviews – From penny slots to Virtual Blackjack, Three-Card Poker, & Roulette, you’ll find a wide variety of choices and denominations to suit your gaming needs. At Presque Isle Downs & Casino…they are the Home of the Big Jackpots! Look for our Progressive Slots conveniently located throughout the casino.

The Presque Isle Downs Casino has over 2000 slot machines and a number of virtual table games such as blackjack, roulette and several others.

There is ample parking at the casino, all surface parking which means on busy days there may be a long walk involved to get to the casino. There are two entrances, with Valet service at the main entrance.

The casino is nice, there is no hotel and there are lots of slot machines. There is also a high roller area as well. The Presque Isle Downs Casino is a combination casino and race track . It is similar to many that have sprung up across the country were the race track has been struggling and the casino addition has meant that the racetrack can continue to operate.
